Sadly, I Think NOT!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO_open_letter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-165\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO_open_letter.jpg\" alt=\"AITO_open_letter\" width=\"590\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO_open_letter.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO_open_letter-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO_open_letter-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">June 2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Dear\u00a0AITO:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">This is an\u00a0<strong>Opinion-Editorial<\/strong>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<strong>Open Letter<\/strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">\u00a0<\/span>to the\u00a0<strong>Association of Independent Tour Operators<\/strong>\u00a0and is based on my personal experience\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">( * pls see #ZPDisclaimer )\u00a0<\/span>with AITO&#8217;s\u00a0holiday review feedback mechanism at www.aito.com. \u00a0Sadly, my experience in dealing with this process has led me\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">to question the independence and integrity of the process<\/span>. \u00a0As such, I cannot but help feel that this feedback system is nothing more than\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>marketing tool<\/strong>\u00a0and in my opinion, it does not have the true interests of the travelling public at heart. \u00a0As such, whilst the reviews on this site can be considered helpful, it is my opinion that the travelling public should NOT assume that they are getting the full information and therefore they should do more research if they want to make\u00a0<em><strong>an informed decision<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0when choosing their next holiday or tour operator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">As this is a long Open Letter and Opinion-Editorial, the background is summarised below:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #333333;\">\n<li>My husband and I each submitted our feedback about our trip to Central Asia with Wild Frontiers Adventure Travel (the tour operator)\u00a0to the AITO site;<\/li>\n<li>[\u00a0*** Please note there is\u00a0<strong><em>another<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0company called &#8220;Wild Frontiers&#8221; (operating as http:\/\/www.wildfrontiers.com) and they are\u00a0<strong>NOT<\/strong>\u00a0related to the tour operator referred in this piece. \u00a0I have not travelled with the Adventure Safari specialist\u00a0www.wildfrontiers.com. \u00a0 For the avoidance of doubt, this letter\u00a0only refers to the company that is based in the UK and operating as\u00a0www.wildfrontierstravel.com and www.wildfrontiers.co.uk . \u00a0**** ]<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Both<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0feedbacks were\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>accepted<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0by AITO and\u00a0were\u00a0initially\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>published<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on the site;<\/li>\n<li>As a consequence of our feedback, WF&#8217;s overall approval rating suffered and went down;<\/li>\n<li>WF responded to my feedback and provided their counterpoints to issues I&#8217;d raised in my review;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Very soon thereafter,\u00a0my feedback disappeared<\/span>\u00a0&#8212; but, my husband&#8217;s feedback remained on the site. \u00a0It looked like WF copied it&#8217;s response to my feedback and pasted it to\u00a0my husband&#8217;s feedback.<\/li>\n<li>( Given that my husband and I both paid the same price on this trip as everyone else in the group,\u00a0it would be wrong to say that we are entitled to just 1 feedback because we travelled as 1 unit. \u00a0If this is the case, then it is saying that my experience does NOT\u00a0count. \u00a0As a fully-paid client,\u00a0<b>my feedback is JUST AS VALID AS\u00a0 my husband&#8217;s and is JUST AS VALID AS\u00a0 the other 11 travellers&#8217; feedback.<\/b>\u00a0)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">As a result of my feedback deletion, WF&#8217;s overall approval rating\u00a0<strong>improved<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0Thus, instead of having\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0negative reviews, Wild Frontiers Adventure Travel now has\u00a0only\u00a0<strong>one<\/strong>\u00a0negative review. \u00a0As a result of this deletion, it is my opinion that the negative review could be spun as a\u00a0<em>&#8221; one-off &#8221; anomaly<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>My feedback was deleted. \u00a0It was not rejected. \u00a0This deletion\u00a0<strong>contradicts<\/strong>\u00a0AITO&#8217;s published process. \u00a0According to AITO:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">&#8221; When your AITO tour operator receives your review, they have the chance to read it and write a response to your comments \u2013 before both are posted live to the\u00a0www.AITO.com\u00a0website. Your comments cannot be edited or changed by the tour operator.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">If there is something in your review which Wild Frontiers wants to discuss with you, then they will contact you directly prior to sending this feedback live to the AITO site.<\/span><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><br style=\"color: #000000;\" \/><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\"><em>In very rare cases your AITO tour operator can choose to \u2018<strong>reject<\/strong>\u2019 the publication of a review. We know that this will be frustrating for you \u2013\u00a0<strong>but rest assured that the number of reviews that a particular company rejects is very clearly recorded on that company\u2019s profile page<\/strong><\/em><em>.<\/em><em>\u00a0Our site\u2019s readers will then be able to draw their own conclusions about this company\u2019s feedback.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"color: #333333;\">\n<li>After a lengthy email conversation with AITO, AITO declined to re-instate my feedback on what I consider to be very dubious grounds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">This Op-Ed &amp; Open Letter serves to debunk their justification for censoring my feedback. \u00a0 Moreover, this OP-ED\u00a0serves to\u00a0illustrate why I think that AITO&#8217;s feedback system is \u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ffff;\"><strong>arbitrary<\/strong><\/span>, \u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ffff;\"><strong>discriminatory<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0 and why I think that it is nothing more than a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ffff;\"><strong>marketing tool<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0designed to give an appearance of fair play and to encourage new clients to book their holidays with confidence with AITO&#8217;s members. \u00a0As such, my advice to fellow travellers is that they should continue to\u00a0<strong>do more research<\/strong>\u00a0to make an informed decision and to not rely solely on\u00a0AITO&#8217;s feedback system to select their tour operator.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Debunking AITO&#8217;s\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">excuses<\/span>\u00a0used to justify the deletion:\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">1. One feedback to be posted per booking policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">This is a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>new<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0policy that was introduced as a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>direct result<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of my email conversation with AITO. \u00a0At the time my feedback was submitted, this was\u00a0<em><strong>NOT<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the policy. \u00a0(Please see Point 3 below in which I have a screenshot of the Terms and Conditions<em>\u00a0_before_<\/em>\u00a0it was changed.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">After updating their policy, AITO tried to justify this policy by stating:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0;\">&#8221; \u00a0<em>if we had a family of 8 travelling and they all had a good time, it wouldn\u2019t be right for them to all post up rave reviews. \u00a0Our statistics are done by booking and the rating achieved against that booking and from these results we judge how each member is performing and the Association overall.<\/em>\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Whilst I can understand the goal of preventing skewed data, I do believe that\u00a0<em>this policy is\u00a0<strong>unsound<\/strong>\u00a0based on two major fundamental flaw<\/em>s. \u00a0First, to achieve balanced data points, AITO should encourage a fair and open forum rather than restrict contributions. \u00a0In AITO&#8217;s hypothetical scenario about the eight family members each providing feedback, if these eight travellers were in a group of twenty travellers, then the eight feedback should be as welcomed as the other twelve feedbacks. \u00a0Each person on the tour who has paid the same\/full price as the others should be treated as an individual contributor and be treated equally. \u00a0The data isn&#8217;t necessarily skewed if all eight family members contribute provided that the other twelve travellers have the same opportunity to contribute as well. \u00a0(If the other 12 travellers choose not to give feedback, then this is an entirely separate issue. \u00a0But, the decision of the twelve travellers in this hypothetical scenario should NOT\u00a0negate the rights of the eight family members.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">In my opinion, the second flaw of this policy is that it is \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ffff;\"><strong>d i s c r i m i n a t o r y<\/strong><\/span>. \u00a0In my case, I paid the same price as the other 12 travellers in my group. \u00a0My husband and I did not receive a discount for &#8216;group travel&#8217; and therefore, why should my experience and feedback be discounted? \u00a0Whilst AITO has invited me to submit a new joint-feedback (in place of the one that is currently online and written by my husband), I&#8217;d declined. \u00a0By forcing me to lump my ratings and feedback with my husband&#8217;s feedback, AITO is treating me\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">d i f f e r e n t l y<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0because I am travelling as a unit with my husband. \u00a0In other words, under the new policy, any married couples, families, or\u00a0\u00a0friends who travel together and booked their trip as a unit will NOT have the same right to provide feedback as those travelling as single travellers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">In this Open Letter to AITO, I would like to highlight to AITO that I think this policy is a direct violation of the\u00a0<strong>European Human Rights Act<\/strong>\u00a0as &#8216;martial status&#8217; is a protected status. \u00a0Common sense would suggest that\u00a0most married travellers\u00a0booked their travels as one unit (for ease of logistics) and thus, married travellers would be ineligible to register their individual feedback.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">2. The feedback site is &#8220;not designed to house long standing regrets which may have been aired extensively in the past.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Well according to AITO&#8217;s guidelines, it states: &#8220;We wish to hear the good, the bad and the ugly, so please include relevant details about your holiday which you believe others would want to know.&#8221; So, I&#8217;d assumed that AITO is looking for honest, informative and sometimes critical feedback so that prospective clients can make informed decisions. \u00a0I guess I&#8217;d assumed incorrectly. \u00a0I would also add that my feedback is not mindless airing of grievances; instead, it is based on my first hand experience and I&#8217;m very careful to write that my reviews are opinions. \u00a0Fellow travellers are welcomed to use my perspectives\u00a0<em>to form their own informed decisions<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Furthermore, why should it matter if the feedback is &#8220;long standing regrets&#8221;? \u00a0And, why should it matter if these sentiments have been &#8220;aired extensively in the past&#8221;? \u00a0If I had previously and extensively aired\u00a0gushy and glowing\u00a0feedback about a tour company on Twitter, Facebook, and\/or on my own blog site, then would AITO object if I then aired the same gushy and glowing reviews on the AITO\u00a0site? \u00a0\u00a0<strong>I think not<\/strong>. \u00a0Based on this experience, it would seem that AITO only objected because the feedback was too painfully honest for the comfort to an AITO&#8217;s member.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">In addition, if AITO declined to publish my comments because I&#8217;ve written about my experience on my personal blog, then\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>to ensure fairness<\/strong><\/span>, AITO needs to remove any (and all) feedback for all tour operators that ALSO contravenes the above policy statement. \u00a0 If not and otherwise, then\u00a0<em><strong>in my opinion<\/strong><\/em>, this demonstrates that both the policy and the enforcement are\u00a0\u00a0<strong style=\"color: #00ffff;\">a r b i t r a r y\u00a0<\/strong>and that the deletion of \u00a0just \u00a0my feedback\u00a0smacks of\u00a0<strong>marketing manipulation<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>censorship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">3. The feedback is too old &#8212; site is designed for more recent travel experiences (i.e. from the last 6 months).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">If this site is intended to capture feedback from recent travels only, then the site was not set up correctly as\u00a0it allows for &#8216;older&#8217; travel experience. \u00a0Looking at the site today, the site still accepts\u00a0feedback from the\u00a0<strong><em>past 4 years<\/em><\/strong>. \u00a0 My (deleted) submission was from Dec\u00a02013 and the trip was from August 2010. \u00a0So, my feedback was well within the timeframe set by the AITO site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-submission.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-submission.jpg\" alt=\"AITO-submission\" width=\"300\" height=\"86\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44\" style=\"width: 687px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-before.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-before.jpg\" alt=\"AITO-TC-before\" width=\"687\" height=\"66\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-before.jpg 687w, https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-before-300x28.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-before-672x66.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">** BEFORE ** &#8212; from May 7, 2014<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43\" style=\"width: 675px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-after.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-after.jpg\" alt=\"AITO-TC-after\" width=\"675\" height=\"86\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-after.jpg 675w, https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-after-300x38.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zombifiedpixie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/AITO-TC-after-672x86.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">. . . and ** AFTER ** (from June 5th)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">In addition, I can see that this\u00a0&#8220;6 months&#8221; clause is a newly introduced clause as it was\u00a0<em>NOT<\/em>\u00a0in the T&amp;C as of May 7, 2014. \u00a0As such, AITO should do the honourable thing and &#8216;grandfather&#8217; any submissions made before this new policy went live. \u00a0 If, however, AITO\u00a0decides not to &#8216;grandfather&#8217; existing submissions (including mine), then\u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">to ensure fairness<\/span>,\u00a0AITO will need to remove any and all feedback on the site that ALSO contravenes this new policy. \u00a0Otherwise, in my opinion, the enforcement of this policy looks very\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>a r b i t r a r y<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Speaking of fairness, if I give AITO the benefit of the doubt and accept the assertion at face value that the original intent of the feedback site is to capture\u00a0<em>only<\/em>\u00a0recent feedback, then it would seem that\u00a0this 4-years submission window was not well known to management as AITO expressed surprise when I pointed out that my feedback was well within the AITO submission timeline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">4.
